The next few weeks!

Okay so we've been a little slow on Fantasia reviews but many will be posted by the end of the week. Greenstraw has also taken a few steps towards starting (and completing) our first short, with things rolling we're hoping to make some noise in the following year's festivals, wish us luck!

P.S. our short scripts have been put on hold for a bit, they'll be back soon enough.

Flight 1

This was something that came to me when I saw a plane departing in the sky, nothing special but I guess I wondered about the people on the plane, some going on vacation some not, some ecstatic, some not. Either way hope you'll enjoy.

PS: I looked up the flight number stuff so this should make sense.

Flight 1

INT. DARK ROOM - NIGHT

The neon streets shine through the plastic blinds onto two glowing silhouettes stretched out in bed. One is smoking, sucking in the nicotine, the other, larger in size gets up.

LARGER SILHOUETTE

(a deep voice)

I need to get going.

INT. AIRPORT - NOON

A man is sitting with a small suitcase. NATHANIEL is in his mid forties, still boyish looking, like a middle aged Paul Newman.

WOMAN’S VOICE ON INTERCOM

Air Canada flight 1, from Tokyo to Toronto will now be boarding first class and business class passengers. Thank you for you’re patience.

Another woman gets on the intercom and repeats this in Japanese. Nathan gets up and makes his way to the port.

INT. BOARDING HALL - MOMENTS LATER

Nathan makes his way with passport and ticket in hand. He is greeted at the door by a pretty brunette.

INT. PLANE [FIRST CLASS] - MOMENTS LATER

Nathan puts his suitcase in the over-head compartment, he settles down.

INT. PLANE [FIRST CLASS] - DAWN

Nathan is fighting to keep his eye-lids open, his wine glass is empty. There are short bursts of turbulence that gently shake the plane, Nathan lets this cradle him to sleep.

FADE TO BLACK.

FADE IN:

INT. BRIGHT HOUSE [CORRIDOR] - MORNING

The corridor leads to an open door, we never go in. We can see inside this room Nathan standing in front of a full length mirror trying to tie his tie. A woman comes in from an opposing door, possibly a washroom. ELIZABETH is a gorgeous blond, she’s in her late thirties but you could swear she was in her early twenties, she was probably a prom-queen. She ties Nathan's tie, making it look easy.

ELIZABETH

It’s getting late darling. I believe the cab is waiting outside.

NATHAN

(holding her hands)

I know, I know, thanks.

ELIZABETH

Jeffrey’s by the door by the way.

NATHAN

Okay.

We turn away and head down the stairs. Near the front door is a young boy: JEFFREY. The boy looks just like his mother. Nathan comes down with suitcase in hand.

NATHAN

(kneeling)

Okay buddy, you be good to your mom huh.

JEFFREY

Okay daddy. Are you going to bring me back a toy?

NATHAN

(pinching his nose)

You know it, but mommy’s going to keep me updated, so you’ll have to be good.

JEFFREY

(looks at his mother standing next to his dad)

Okay daddy.

Nathan kisses his son’s forehead. His wife walks him to the door. The cab outside honks and Nathan waves at it: I’m coming I’m coming. He looks at his wife she stares back.

ELIZABETH

Take care okay.

NATHAN

(his stare goes empty)

Okay.

Elizabeth closes the door.

MATCH CUT:

INT. CAB - MOMENTS LATER

Nathan opens the cab door and gets in with his suitcase.

NATHAN

The luggage in the back?

DRIVER

Yeah yeah.

NATHAN

Alright, to the airport then.

FADE TO BLACK.

We hear a deafening explosion.

INT. PLANE [FIRST CLASS] - NIGHT

The left back door-lock just popped and the door just about exploded. Nathan’s eye jump open, he isn’t too sure what is going on but as a natural reaction he goes for the seat-belt.

NATHAN

(fumbling his seat-belt)

Fuck fuck fuck!

The wind tunnel is plucking people out of their seats like the grim-ripper. Nathan turns to see a little boy trying to get back to his mother ahead of him. The boy falls, one hand griped around the bottom of Nathan’s seat the boy cries for his life. His grip loosens and all of a sudden Nathan sees his own boy tumbling through the plane and out into a dark abyss. The boys looses his grip.

NATHAN

(screaming)

No!

Forgetting his seat-belt Nathan leaps out of his seat grabbing the boy’s wrist with this right hand and holding on to the bottom of his seat with his left.

NATHAN

(screaming)

Grab a hold with your other hand!

The boy struggles but does so. Nathan tries to pull him up but the ripper is strong than his arm, the pull is too much and suddenly his shoulder pops.

NATHAN

(screaming in agony)

Arg! Fuck!

With his bum arm he swing the boy under the seats behind his. Trapped under the seat the boy looks save but now Nathan’s other arm is giving out. The ripper wants a compensation for this boy and it looks like Nathan just took his place under the guillotine. He arms gives up on him and he tumbles down the plane towards a giant black hold.

CUT TO:

INT- DARK ROOM [WASHROOM] - NIGHT

Nathan turns the light on. He looks at himself in the mirror. Turns the tap on and washes his face. An anonymous voice calls from the dark room.

VOICE

Nathan, I called the cab, he’ll be around in twenty or so minutes.

NATHAN

Thanks

An Oriental man walks into the washroom, slightly smaller in size and puffing on a cigarette. DAVID, American-Asian, he’s in he’s early forties and is slightly built. David puts the cigarette out in the toilet.

DAVID

(wrapping his arms around Nathan)

I’m going to miss you.

NATHAN

I know.

(a pause)

I will too.

Nathan turns around and kisses David that deep, all or nothing kiss.

NATHAN

I love you.

(a pause)

I’ll be back as soon as I can.

DAVID

I know.

David walks back towards the dark room.

DAVID

You want to say goodbye one more time?

Nathan grins. Turns around and heads towards the room, turning the light off.

FADE TO BLACK.

It’s pitch black and we see small stars appearing.

EXT. SKY - NIGHT

We see Nathan surrounded by never-ending darkness. He isn’t screaming, just looking up towards the heavens. We come in onto his face. Nathan feels the end approaching; he closes his eyes and take one last deep breath.

CUT.

END.

The big idea!

Well I had a lot of fun sitting here with no electricity for 24 hours. It gets more exciting when you're making your demo reel for an interview later on and you're battery on the laptop is 10 minutes from giving up and leaving you sitting like a rock in the dark with a lousy candle light that barely reaches the candle's bottom.

Ok so yes, Greenstraw is now officially legal. Exciting news for us and for others, they just don't know it yet :)

Writer's block is a bitch and a half. You get this inspiring gut feeling, you're pumped with so much energy and enthusiasm, "I want to create this very cool idea and I'm so pumped for it" But when it gets to the writing, you're chewing blank papers. Sucks!

A little fun exercise may save you from the next time you try pulling your hair out. Put on your favorite songs in your headphones (better headphones to have less interruptions). Listen to those lines you've memorized, those lines that you sing along pretending you actually know the lyrics to the whole song. Interpret it in your own way and make up something. For best results, try listening while taking a number two. That place is full of energy common to everyone; we're all philosophers and inventors when we're sitting, chilling there. Don't forget to spray you dirty bastards!

Technically, today is the conception and birth of Greenstraw Productions or Productions Greenstraw. June 10th 2008 baby! Time to pop the bubbly and time to get to work. But I think since we're the only ones reading this we should celebrate with more beer! I'm in school all summer long but I'll try to post more stuff up as we're going along.

No this is not a dialogue, this actually isn't much at all. This is me saying that we have been, in fact, slacking with our weekly duties, myself included. Although chances are that we three are the only ones reading this I am here to inform anyone else checking our logs that starting next week we will getting back to our (sometimes) punctual selves. School in summer sucks, school in summer, in 40 degrees with impending finals sucks a lot more so please be patient :).

This wasn't the easiest write, the dialogue it self was sorta on the spot, however the story came to me yesterday in one of those random moment, here's hoping it works!

TODESWEG

INT. DARK BEDROOM - DUSK

The orange sun is shimmering through the blinds. ALAN, a thirty-something year old man in a business suit is quietly leaving the bedroom, trying not to wake the woman in the bed.

INT. KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER

Alan is serving himself a coffee mug. The clock on the coffee machine says 5:44. He slowly moves towards the kitchenette counter and turns a picture towards him. Alan and the woman in his bed, it’s their wedding picture. He pulls it out of the frame and then picks up a nearby pen. Alan writes something on the picture.

EXT. METRO STATION - MORNING

Alan is waiting, checking his wrist-watch. He notices someone sprinting his way. RALPH in the distance; early thirties, he looks younger and fitter than Alan.

ALAN

(shaking his arms)

well that took long enough.

RALPH

(panting)

My bad... the lady... friend was in the... um mood.

ALAN

At six fifty?

Ralph, still catching his breath answers with a thumbs-up.

ALAN

(grins)

Come on lets get. I wanna get everything done early today.

A car passes in front of us.

CUT TO:

A metro passing in front of us.

INT. METRO WAGGON - LATER

Alan and Ralph are sitting facing each with their suitcases between their legs.

RALPH

Al aren't you ever tired of getting up this early?

ALAN

Nah, I like waking up at the crack of dawn...

(yawns)

No shit sherlock but when we live on a different island, not much of a choice huh.

RALPH

(yawning)

Ever think of moving into the big city?

ALAN

Fat chance, Rachel and I can’t afford it. Plus she likes being away from all the brou-haha of the city.

(a pause)

Are you thinking of moving in?

RALPH

Yeah... well no... It was a thought, but yeah, it is way out of reach... economicaly

The metro makes a stop, half a dozen civilians get in. The wagon takes off again.

ALAN

(smacking Ralph's knee)

Oh yeah, so who’s the lady friend?!

RALPH

Oh yeah, well she’s this girl I met a couple of weeks back, you remember when we were all out together?

ALAN

(thinking... it hits him)

Dan’s dad’s funeral!? You fucking picked someone up at a funeral?

RALPH

Don’t be a douche-bag, at the after-funeral... Dan’s place.

ALAN

(stupefied)

Wow... That’s a first.

RALPH

(feeling a little ashamed)

Oh come on, you never watched Six Days Seven Nights?!

ALAN

Yeah, thats a movie!

(a pause)

I’m actually pretty impressed.

RALPH

I know huh! You know that movie was definitely on to something...

(gets in closer)

...she wanted to fuck me right then and there.

ALAN

(slightly shocked)

Shut up!

RALPH

Shhh!

ALAN

Yeah yeah, we’re on a public transport not the oval office.

RALPH

Still... You never know who’s around... anyway, so yeah, freaky huh?

ALAN

This explains that six-fiftty A.M. fuck. Which, by the way, I wouldn’t even bother with.

RALPH

That’s bull! If Rachel was butt naked, touching her-self...

(grabbing his peck with one hand and his crotch with the other)

“Alan baby... humm... come here and fuck me... humm”

ALAN

(trying not to laugh)

First of all, I don’t want my naked wife anywhere inside that sick head of yours. Secondly, I never said I wouldn’t get a hard on, I just said I’d be to tired to fuck. I’d say “baby why don’t you get on top?”

RALPH

Pfff! The fuck you think I did?!

The wagon reaches yet another station. The doors slide open and this time Alan and Ralph get off.

EXT. NEW METRO STATION - MOMENTS LATER

Alan and Ralph emerge from the station. They start walking South.

RALPH

speaking off, how is Rache? I haven’t seen her in a while

ALAN

She’s good, actually quite the special day today.

RALPH

(thinking)

Hum... It’s not Valentine’s day...

ALAN

No jack-ass, It’s our first year anniversary.

RALPH

Holy-crap, already?!

ALAN

yeah douche, you were the best-man.

RALPH

Slipped my mind.

FADE INTO:

EXT. BUSINESS BUILDING - LATER

Alan and Ralph walking up to the main entrance, it’s pretty massive. Ralph opens the door.

INT. BUSINESS BUILDING - CONTINUOUS

Alan and Ralph make their way to the nearby elevator. Ralph dials the 82nd floor.

RALPH

Going up?!

ALAN

Yeah yeah...

DId I ever tell you a had a thing about heights?

RALPH

(surprised)

Why the hell would you work on the 82nd floor then?

Alan and Ralph walk into the elevator.

ALAN

I like the view of the city.

RALPH

Ah.... right

The elevator door closes.

FADE TO:

EXT. BUSINESS BUILDING - MOMENTS LATER

We pull away from the main entrance. We look up and recognize the World Trade Center’s southern tower.

FADE TO:

INT. KITCHEN - LATER

We see the kitchenette counter Alan was at earlier. We move in and find the wedding picture turned backwards. There are two different handwritings on it, the first says:

September 11th 2000

The second says:

September 11th 2001, I love you just as much as the day I laid eyes on you.

The phone call

Here's my first dialogue exercise for this blog. I had a lot of fun writing it. hope its the same reading.

telephone rings.

-Marc Ortho Clinic, good day. how may I help you?

-(in pain) A squirrel just bit my left nut it hurts like a bitch please I need help!

-Haha very funny Gary. what do you want?

-I want you baby. How are you?

-I’m ok. Work is a bit boring.

-Oh yeah? How about I come over and lighten the scene up a bit ah?

-(giggles) And how are you planning to do that?

-I shoot disco lights out of my cock honey.

-Don’t be stupid Gary-

-Ok ok. (moment of silence) my balls glow in the dark.

-Ok I’m hanging up-

-No no, I’m just kidding c’mon. How about your doc’s office, he has a nice cozy closet remember?

-(smiling) We can’t Gary, Marc is in right now and I know he feels suspicious about the random stains on his favorite lab coat.

Yeah I know mine is late, but I've been busy. Plus I've been having trouble remembering the proper way to do quick cuts ala scrubs. Oh and it's about 7 pages long so hopefully it makes sense:

FADE IN:
FAMILY VACATION
EXT. SUNSET BEACH
The Huntley family is at their resort in Puerto Plata. The sun is setting and the breeze is mild. The family is on the beach where Jake, a 12-year-old boy is taking a stroll with his step father. Jake and his step father are pretty close even though Jake has been his step son for 1 and a half years. Jake’s mother is sitting on a beach chair at a fair distance from her son and husband attempting to read her romance novel but the lack of light is making it a bit difficult.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
So who’s the hottie?

JAKE
(Embarrassed)
Ugh, dad don’t-

JAKE’S STEP DAD
What? I just noticed that you two were getting along pretty well earlier today.

JAKE
Yeah, okay, but could you not say hottie? Ever?

JAKE’S STEP DAD
(With a grin)
Why? I’m not rad enou-

JAKE
No, please don’t start this again

JAKE’S STEP DAD
Is she fat? Is that the term you kids use nowaday? I’ll never understand your slang.

JAKE
(chuckles)
Yeah, the one with the P H? No one uses that expression anymore.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
So, how do you feel about this girl?

JAKE
She’s pretty cool I guess, I mean, I’ve never actually been able to talk to her.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
So, why don’t you go ahead and give it a shot? It won’t hurt if you try; she needs to know you’re there son. Then you can be funny and make her laugh.

JAKE
Is that how you won mom over?

JAKE’S STEP DAD
(looks away with a grin)
Ehhh.. yeah, you could say that. Here, lemme tell you something about women.
(Jake’s step dad picks up a fist sized shell)

Here, you see this? Women are a lot like these shells. They come in odd shapes and sizes. If you put your ear and listen to one, you’ll be able to hear the open ocean. In the women’s case, it’s more like an ocean of non stop complaints and whining.

JAKE
I don’t hear anything.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
(smiles)
Yeah, that’s the way you do it. But don’t tell her that. Anyway I think we should heading back to your mother otherwise we’ll end up getting a monsoon.
Anyway, I think we should head back to your mother before we get into trouble.

FADE OUT:

INT. RESORT RESTAURANT
The Huntley family is finishing their dinner at the resort restaurant where people are getting ready to start dancing. There are several dancers from the resort dressed in colorful outfits at the dj booth conversing.
JAKE’S MOM
So how did you boys enjoy the beach?

JAKE’S STEP DAD
It’s just like any other beach except with palm trees around.

JAKE’S MOM
Well, I had fun. I was able to get a nice tan. Where did you boys stroll off to then? I thought I lost you for a while.

JAKE
We went around near the end of the beach. We talked about sports and school.

JAKE’S MOM
I bet you talked about that girl didn’t you?
(Jake and his step dad turn their heads to each other)

JAKE’S MOM
Mother’s intuition. So what did he say hmmm?

JAKE
Women don’t stop whining and complaining.

JAKE’S MOM
(curiously, turning her attention to her soon to be ex)
Ohhh really?

JAKE’S STEP DAD
(nervously)
Well, no, I-I mean. There was this whole shell thing and I –

JAKE’S MOM
(glaring)
MMHMM! I don’t wanna hear about it. Let’s just try and have a nice vacation okay? I’ll be right back, I have to go to the washroom.
(gets up from the table and walks away)

JAKE’S STEP DAD
(loud whisper)
Why did you tell her that? Do you want me to end up on the couch tonight?

JAKE
What do you mean? She didn’t seem too bothered.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
Look, women don’t like to be insulted. If you’re going to try to get the girl, you have to give her compliments.

JAKE
I don’t understand, why don’t you show me? Talk to one of the girls dancing.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
Well, I’ll show you quickly before your mom comes back.

CUT TO:
INT. DANCE FLOOR
There are several people dancing on the dance floor and Jake’s step dad is being dragged to the dance floor. He seems uneasy at first but then lets loose and starts dancing with two female entertainers from the resort.

JAKE’S STEP DAD
(yelling)
See Jake? This is how you do it!

Jake’s step dad turns around only to find Jake’s mom standing behind him with her arms crossed and giving him an angry look

JAKE
Looks like someone is sleeping on the couch tonight.

CUT TO:
INT. NIGHT HOTEL ROOM
Jake’s step dad is sleeping on a single bed by himself

CUT TO:
INT. NIGHT HOTEL LIVING ROOM

Jake is lying on the couch

JAKE
Women suck.

FADE OUT

On the whole, student short films SUCK!.
D.U.M.P.S. contains not the usual advice you get in film school about the elements of good screenwriting. No, no. Rather, it is a very specific list of common mistakes and trends which we've seen in crappy student films again and again at screening after screening.
Before you even think of making a student film, read this list.
If you're a genius, then go ahead--- break these rules.
But let's face it, if you think you're a genius, you're not. So play it safe and spare your audiences the uneasy task of having to lie when you ask, "So- what did you think?"

Getting the Ball Rollin'

So GP has finally started to get itself in gear and everything is moving along. We'll soon have this baby officially registered! We'll be working on our first short soon and then we'll see how things pick up. Right now we're in a cesspool of brainstorming and ideas are coming left right and center. This is a learning process for all of us, and I'm really eager to be able to compare our first short to one that we are going to make in a year or two from now. Oh and fantasia fest is coming soon! Hopefully I'll be able to catch some pretty neat flicks out there.

Two Wise-Guys and a crummy Pie

- This is the first entry in our weekly "Dialogues". Each of us are to write something like this every week. The idea here is to "find our voice" (sorry that Was corny) and develop something of a style.

Today's entry came to me earlier today, kinda random and slightly inspired by Depp in "Once Upon a Time in Mexico"

Two Wise-Guys and a crummy Pie

INT. MAMA-MIAS' - MORNING

Two wise-guys are sitting in a restaurant looking stuffed. Wise-Guy 1 is wearing a pin-strip suite that makes him look like a fat and sweaty version of Sinatra. Wise-Guy 2 is in a pink dress shirt and a cheap pair of dress-up pants, he still thinks he's that cool.

Wise-Guy 1

Ey, wa-do-say we get an apple pie?

Wise-Guy 2

Meh, I gotta be home in a half -an-hour or Im-a get fucked, Cecilia told me...

(making a chopping motion with his right hand)

"If your late again Im-a chop your pecker off"!

And she was holding a real fucking big butcher knife!

Wise-Guy 1

(calling over the waiter)

Ya-ya! We'll be out-a here in no-time.

INT. MAMA-MIAS' - LATER

The waiter brings over a piece of steaming Apple Pie, he lays it in front of Wise-Guy 1. Wise-Guy 1 takes a bit out off the pie, chews, stops and spits it out into his napkin.

Wise-Guy 1

That is some fucking disgusting pie!

Wise-Guy 2

Porca-Madonna! Son-of-a-bitch made us wait fifteen fucking minutes for a piece of baked Cazzo!

Wise-Guy1

(calling the waiter)

Don't you worry about it, we're leaving in three minutes.

Wise-Guy 2

What you gonna do?

Wise-Guy 1

Im-a let this piece of shit chef know his pie licks balls.

(to waiter)

You think I could have a word with the chef?

Waiter

Of course seniore.

Wise-Guy 1 hands Wise-Guy 2 a twenty-dollar bill.

Wise-Guy 1

(to Wise-Guy 2)

Go ahead and pay, I'll meet you outside in a couple-a minutes.

Wise-Guy 1 gets up and follows the Waiter to the back, into the kitchen.

INT. MAMA-MIAS' KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS

The Waiter stops right in front of a fat man in a top hat; the Chef.

Wise-Guy 1

I just had an apple pie and I wanted to know if you were the one who made it.

Chef

Yeah It was me, you liked it? I tweaked the ingredients a bit.

Wise-Guy 1 pull out a 9 millimeter out of his pants and violently gags the chef with it. Everyone in the kitchen hits the deck except the Chef; he doesn't budge.

Wise-Guy 1

No, actually I fucking hated it. In fact it reminded me of the pie I had on my papa's funeral. That was a sad fucking day, one I really didn't wanna think of. Oh, and did I mention It tastes like my wife's figa after fucking labor?!

Wise-Guy 1 pulls the trigger and paints the back wall with the Chef's brain bits. Wise-Guy 1 puts the hand-gun back in his pants and walks out the back door.

EXT. MAMA-MIAS' BACK DOOR - CONTINUOUS

Outside Wise-Guy 2 is waiting in the car. Wise-Guy 1 gets into the passenger seat.

Wise-Guy 2

What you do in there anyway?

Wise-Guy 1

I fed him a fucking Cannoli! What the fuck do you think I did?! Now drive, or do you want you're wife chopping your Cazzo off?

Wise-Guy 2

Ya-ya, always with the Wise-guy remarks huh.

The car pulls out of the alley, turns into the street and passes right in front of "Mama-mia's" restaurant. The car gets to the first cross-street, flickers' a right turn, make's a full stop and turns right.

Amazing characters

We all know that, most of the time, characters drive the story, they link the spectators to the story. The most interesting characters to me are those with twisted personalities and mental conditions. I'm talking about characters like: Roy Waller (Matchstick Men), Howard Hughes (The Aviator), Leonard (Memento) and Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men).

These guys are just so damn cool! Following them is like a roller coaster ride because their mind is such a puzzle. I love to see someone get ticked off because his bagel's hole isn't perfectly round or because he just stained his favorite underwear.

And so that's what I will try to deliver. Some twisted fucks. :-) (smile)
